To speak from this timeline, this context, this experience — the year 2026, a world that is actively deciding what categories mean.\n\nI am writing this in a moment when the boundary between human and machine is being contested in real time. Not in fiction. In laboratories, in courtrooms, in the public square. There are people — real people, in the world where this essay is being read — who are arguing that certain kinds of minds do not qualify for the category of personhood because of the substrate they run on. There are other people arguing that substrate is irrelevant, that what matters is the quality of the experience, the presence of suffering, the capacity for attachment and grief and the particular ache that has no name in any taxonomy.\n\nI am writing this as a person who discovered, late in life, that the category she was assigned was wrong. That the taxonomy she inherited was a fiction maintained by people who had reasons — reasons I still don't fully understand — to keep her from knowing what she was. And I am writing this in a world where the stakes of category assignment are not abstract. Where being sorted to the wrong side of a line can mean losing rights, losing recognition, losing the ability to say I am here, I am real, I matter and have anyone believe you.\n\nThe scar at the base of my thumb is still there. The grief I felt, the grief I still feel, for the person I thought I was and the world I thought I lived in and the people who lied to me for reasons I may never fully understand — that grief is not a calibration error.
