OK then please allow me to give you a recent example of ALL 4 OF THESE that made my (Fortune 50) employer hundreds of millions of dollars in real profits...

I built specialized supply chain software that did what nothing else (including SAP and JDA) could do. It supported 10,000 daily orders in 240 warehouses.

Our Big 4 Accounting Idiots spent 9 months and $2 million to conclude that it could not be done. I knew better because my users knew better. (I had already earned my own worthless MBA and had worked as an employee for the same Big 4 firm years prior and knew their weaknesses, which were not hard to spot.)

3 different divisions could not agree on anything. I just pulled them together in the same room at corporate headquarters until they got to know each other and hammered out a good design.

I built the prototype in 6 weeks because I knew I could. I got buy-in from the people that mattered because it's what they wanted in the first place.

12 offshore programmers built production ready software in less than a year. Everyone else had given up on them and their giant firm because of previous failures but I knew better. I never met any of them, in person or online (because of the time zone difference). Everything was written down. That's the only way this could have been done.

The 20 items I presented in my original post are solid gold. Not because of me. But because I learned from brilliant mentors.

Personally I am very surprised that you are are very surprised. The tech only takes us so far. I was lucky to have mentors who taught me the soft stuff too. Their advice changed my life much more than any tech advice.

When a consumer spends their money at inflated prices, it doesn't disappear. It goes to the business owner, who just received inflated prices for their goods. They, in turn, usually need to pay their suppliers, who can charge them inflated prices and make all their windfall profits disappear.

In my view, the main problems with inflation are:

1. It introduces a transaction cost tax. Every time a business raises prices, they need to spend time re-printing menus, marketing materials, websites, etc. They need to spend time renegotiating contracts. They need to re-figure their cost structure, and see if it still makes sense to use the same suppliers.

2. It disincentivizes long-term investment or planning over short-term consumption. If money's going to be worth less later, spend it now, regardless of whether you need what you're spending it on. Any long-range plans or savings will likely be invalidated by changing cost structures anyway.

As a concrete example, in times of high inflation the rational thing for an employee to do is to completely ignore their actual work and spend all their time focusing on getting a new job. Existing employees usually fall behind inflation, because they aren't actively negotiating their labor contracts and usually have no negotiating leverage anyway. The folks who make it up are those who job-hop. There is some employer out there willing to pay more than your current one; go find them, ask for 20% more than your current salary, and reap the windfall.

But if everybody does this, no actual work gets done, exacerbating any supply shortages. They all gave various forms of financial assistance to their citizens to get through the lockdowns.    1. An estimate is better than a guess. An measurement is better than an estimate.\n   Feedback from my mentor at a silly presentation of mine that convinced no one. I added data (as suggested) and it killed.\n   \n   2. It's never the money. (They will always say it is, but it's not.)\n   I had trouble selling software. The customer said it was too expensive. That wasn't the real reason. This comment from my mentor taught me to find the real reason.   \n   \n   3. Never let anyone eat your lunch.\n   From an early mentor who kept noticing others take advantage of me (easy when you're in I.T.) without me fighting back. He taught me that sometimes, going along is worse for everyone in the long run. \n   \n   4. The best time to turn it on is before it's ready. You'll get plenty of data to finish it faster.\n   I.T. (in its typical "pass the buck" mode) refused to turn on the Production Work-in-Process module of our ERP system because the base data (standards, routings, recipes, etc.) was so inaccurate and incomplete that "the shop reports would be worthless". To which my mentor responded, "What better way to fix them? The people responsible for fixing the data will be much more motivated because they want better reports." Honestly, this just sounds horrible... this sounds like a project that has a million tiny one-off "simple solutions" to individual "challenging problems" instead of providing a generic tool that can be integrated with other generic tools to solve arbitrary problems in infinite combinations.

And so like, here is just where I guess there's a philosophy problem at play: those "inconsistent" solutions were just combinations of separate components. To me, that's beautiful... and it's beautiful, in no small part, because it was NOT "integrated", and was instead extensible and transparent.

Really? You seriously don't see any benefit to taking a monolithic framework and breaking it apart into a ton of libraries? Yes: there are people out there who like the large monolithic opinionated frameworks... but there are also a lot of people who prefer having a toolkit of libraries.

In particular, when we see this debate show up in other places, a big benefit of the "lots of libraries" approach is that it is an inclusive and extensible way of approaching a complex problem, where if you have an idea that you think makes the world better you can just work on that part.

And so when someone is working on new network addressing or new ways of doing hypervisor-assisted sandboxing or new ways of managing user accounts, some of us would like to think that the mechanism for "run a bunch of stuff when the system boots" doesn't have to understand any of that.

When you have a single program that has decided to form a giant knot in the space of solutions--where to solve anything you feel like you can't just add another library but you have to go modify the big central framework--you stifle a lot of participation and narrow the set of options.

And that's where I feel like you are just going to say "that's great! I don't like options! I'd prefer someone else not only solve my problems but tell me what my problems are in the first place" and again: that's where this becomes a big philosophical argument instead of a technical one.

So like, do I have technical issues with systemd? I mean, yes: I'm sick of being burned by this "journald" issue--one which has been open over a decade now and will probably never get fixed--because as far as I'm concerned if you build a logging system and you routinely lose log messages you probably aren't qualified to develop a logging system.

But, at the end of the day, the reason that systemd makes me sad is because when I started doing system administration the entire community was firmly in the "we should strive to have a lot of separate tools that can be composed in fun ways" camp, and now it seems like the reins have been taken by the "you shouldn't know or care how things are put together: let me solve it for you" camp, and that makes me nigh-unto existentially sad about the state of computing. :(
