Things worth knowing

\n\n

Office shelf — two separate planters, which is the right setup. These two want opposite things: the Peperomia dries halfway down, the Prayer Plant never dries at all. Because they're independently potted you can simply water them on different schedules. The only thing to watch is that neither cachepot holds standing runoff — the Peperomia rots readily. Same shelf, same filtered light, completely different watering days.

\n\n

Water quality matters for exactly four pots. Both Spider Plants and the Prayer Plant are on the documented list of fluorine-sensitive houseplants — fluoride and accumulated salts in tap water are the standard cause of their brown, crispy tips. Use distilled, RO, or collected rainwater for those. Tap is fine for everything else. (Letting tap water sit out overnight off-gasses chlorine, but does nothing about fluoride or chloramine — it isn't a substitute.)

\n\n

How to actually check. Three tools, in order of reliability:

Pot weight — the best single signal. Lift each pot right after watering and again a week later; you'll calibrate fast.
Wooden skewer — push it to the bottom, pull it out. Dark or with soil clinging = still wet. Clean and dry = go.
Finger — fine for the top inch, useless for what's happening at the root ball. Surface dryness is misleading in AC air, which dries the top layer while the core stays soaked.

When you water, water thoroughly — until 10–20% runs out the drainage holes. Then dump the saucer. Small frequent sips leave the lower root zone permanently dry and concentrate salts up top.

\n\n

Direct sun caution for the spider plants. Those southern and western windows are big and unobstructed. Spider plant foliage scalds in direct sun — bright indirect is the target. If they're hanging in a beam of afternoon sun, pull them back a couple of feet or diffuse it. The Hoya is the opposite: it earns its blooms in that SW corner and wants the direct light.

Come autumn (~late September), change three things: stop fertilizing entirely, stretch every interval, and let the Prayer Plant run slightly drier than it does now. Reduced light means reduced water — keeping a summer schedule through winter is the most common way well-cared-for houseplants die.

Baby Peperomia6\", office shelf	Sustee, skewer	Sustee white, leaves still firm. The probe reads slightly later than \"top half dry\" — and erring late is the safe direction for this one. Water, drain, walk away.	stay wet. Root rot from overwatering is the most common way peperomias die.
Red Prayer Plant6\", office shelf	finger only	The very surface — about ½\" — has just gone dry to the touch. Consistently moist all growing season. No probe fits this plant: any Sustee reads too deep and would sit blue long after it needed water.	dry out. Crispy brown edges = dry air or tap-water minerals. Use distilled and raise humidity.

Things worth knowing

How to actually check. Four tools, each reliable at a different depth — no single one covers the whole pot:

Sustee probe (Medium ×5: Majesty, both Pothos, ZZ 6\", Peperomia) — blue = moist at the tip, white = tip zone dry. Reads one fixed depth forever, so it's a real trigger for the Pothos, ZZ and Peperomia, but only an alarm on the Majesty (should be blue almost always). Leave it in — pulling it in and out damages roots. If it stops changing colour across a full dry-down, the wick core is spent; replace it.
Wooden skewer — push to the base, pull out, read the depth where the dark damp band ends. Use the same hole each time and dry it between pots. On the two 10\" palms it can't reach the base, so it reads their top half only.
Pot weight — the best single whole-pot signal, and free. Lift right after watering and again a week later; you calibrate fast. Ideal for the hanging pots you're already handling.
Finger — fine for the top inch, useless below it. In AC air the surface dries while the core stays soaked — trustworthy only for the Prayer Plant and Majesty, whose trigger genuinely lives up top.

When they disagree: Sustee white but skewer damp deep → suspect the probe, reseat or replace it. Skewer clean but pot heavy → it didn't reach far enough, re-probe. Clean skewer + light pot + white probe → water, no doubt about it.

When you water, water thoroughly — until 10–20% runs out the drainage holes. Then dump the saucer. Small frequent sips leave the lower root zone permanently dry and concentrate salts up top.

\n\n

What time of day. Morning, ideally early. Water taken up during the warm active part of the day means the medium isn't left cold and soaking through the coolest hours — which is exactly when rot organisms thrive. It matters most for the rot-prone pots (Peperomia, both ZZ, Hoya, Spider Plants): never water those at night. It matters least for the Prayer Plant and Majesty, kept moist anyway — water them whenever you do their pass. Avoid midday on anything in direct sun (the Spider Plants and Hoya by the windows) — the surface evaporates before roots can draw it down, so you under-deliver. If mornings are impossible, early evening beats late night. This is the tiebreaker, not the trigger: a thirsty plant watered at the \"wrong\" hour still beats one left dry on principle.

\n\n

Feeding, in practice. One bottle covers all eleven. Look for a complete liquid — one that carries calcium and magnesium alongside the N-P-K, which most cheap houseplant foods leave out. Dyna-Gro Foliage-Pro 9-3-6 is the usual pick. A balanced 10-10-10 also works fine at ¼ strength; it just supplies more phosphorus than foliage plants need and typically skips the micronutrients.

Never onto dry soil. Water first, or feed soil that's already damp. Dry roots plus fertilizer salts is where burn actually happens.
Feed instead of that pot's plain watering, not in addition to it. Mix it in the can and use it as that day's water.
Distilled or RO for the two Spider Plants and the Prayer Plant — same as their normal water. Feeding the salt-sensitive three with tap stacks two problems.
Both ZZ Plants: twice a year. Once in August, once in September. Nothing else, ever.
Skip fertilizer spikes. They create one small pocket of very high concentration instead of feeding evenly.

Overfeeding looks almost exactly like drought — brown crispy tips — because excess salts pull water back out of the roots. Underfeeding is fixable in a week; overfeeding damages roots. When in doubt, less. And if the Majesty Palm's oldest, lowest fronds yellow, that's a magnesium or potassium gap rather than a watering problem.
