🌊 Newton's Laws Applied to Landing

1st Law (Inertia): The spacecraft in orbit wants to keep moving in a straight line at ~28,000 km/h. Earth's atmosphere forces it to slow down.
2nd Law (F=ma): The deceleration force on an astronaut equals their mass × the deceleration rate. At 3.5g, a 70kg astronaut experiences 2,401N of force!
3rd Law (Action/Reaction): Retrorockets fire backward; the reaction pushes the spacecraft forward to slow descent. Parachutes push air down; air pushes capsule up.

💨 Aerodynamic Drag in Detail

Drag force = ½ × ρ × v² × Cd × A, where ρ is air density, v is velocity, Cd is drag coefficient, and A is cross-sectional area. As the capsule descends, air density increases, dramatically raising drag even as velocity drops. The blunt-body design of capsules like Soyuz and Crew Dragon maximizes Cd intentionally — more drag means faster deceleration and a cooler heat shield!

🔥 Aerodynamic Heating

At orbital speeds (~7.7 km/s), air molecules cannot move out of the way fast enough. They compress in front of the capsule, and kinetic energy converts to heat via compression (not friction — a common misconception!). Temperatures reach ~1,650°C. Heat shields use ablative materials (like PICA — Phenolic Impregnated Carbon Ablator) that vaporize and carry heat away from the craft.

Muscular

Leg and back muscles atrophy rapidly. Astronauts exercise 2.5 hours/day in space just to slow this process.

The vestibular system resets for weightlessness. Upon landing, astronauts experience \"gravitational confusion,\" dizziness, and poor balance.

🚀 The Reentry & Landing Sequence

De-orbit Burn (~30 min before landing)

Retrorockets fire for ~3 minutes, reducing orbital velocity by ~128 m/s. This lowers the orbit's perigee into the atmosphere. At this point the spacecraft is still ~300 km above Earth.

Atmospheric Interface (~120 km altitude)

The spacecraft begins to \"feel\" the atmosphere. Aerodynamic forces start building. Heat shield faces the direction of travel. The spacecraft is traveling at ~7.7 km/s (Mach 25+).

Peak Heating (~60-80 km altitude)

Maximum thermal load on the heat shield. Plasma sheath forms, causing a communications blackout of ~4-8 minutes. Temperatures exceed 1,650°C on the shield exterior while the interior stays below 40°C.

Peak G-Force (~40-50 km altitude)

Maximum deceleration occurs. Crew Dragon and Soyuz experience ~3.5-4g. Astronauts are reclined on their backs so forces act \"eyeballs-in\" (chest to back), which is safer for weakened cardiovascular systems.

Parachute Deployment (~10 km altitude)

Drogue parachutes deploy first to stabilize, then main parachutes open. For Soyuz: three main chutes. Speed drops from ~300 m/s to ~8 m/s. Crew Dragon uses four main parachutes called \"Mk3\".

Touchdown / Splashdown (~0 km)

Soyuz fires solid rockets 1 meter before ground contact to soften landing (~3 m/s final speed). Crew Dragon splashes down in the ocean at ~7 m/s. Medical teams immediately assist crew who cannot walk unaided.

\n\n\n

📐 Key Physics Equations & Concepts

F = m × a

Newton's Second Law. Force equals mass times acceleration. If a 75kg astronaut decelerates at 3.5g (34.3 m/s²), the force on them is 75 × 34.3 = 2,572.5 Newtons — about 3.5× their normal Earth weight.

Fd = ½ρv²CdA

Drag Force Equation. ρ = air density, v = velocity, Cd = drag coefficient, A = cross-section area. This shows why drag increases with the SQUARE of velocity — doubling speed quadruples drag force.

KE = ½mv²

Kinetic Energy. At orbital speed, enormous KE must be converted to heat (via drag) and sound. A 9,000kg capsule at 7,700 m/s has KE of ~267 billion Joules — equivalent to ~64 tons of TNT!

W = m × g

Weight. On Earth, weight = mass × 9.8 m/s². In orbit, the capsule is in free fall, so effective weight = 0 (microgravity). Upon landing, full weight returns suddenly to weakened muscles and bones.

p = m × v

Momentum. The impulse-momentum theorem explains how parachutes work: a large stopping force over a short time, or a smaller force over a longer time, produce the same change in momentum. Parachutes choose the safer second option.

T = 2π√(r³/GM)

Orbital Period. Kepler's third law relates orbit radius to period. The ISS orbits at 408 km altitude with T ≈ 92 minutes, completing ~15.5 orbits per day at ~7.66 km/s.

🌡️ G-Force Tolerance: Body Position Matters

Supine position (lying on back, +Gx): Humans tolerate 3-4g for extended periods without passing out — used for reentry
Eyeballs-out (-Gx, feet-to-head): Extremely dangerous; blood rushes to head. Maximum ~2g briefly
Eyeballs-in (+Gx, head-to-feet): Most dangerous; blood drains from brain causing GLOC (G-induced Loss of Consciousness)
Why astronauts lie back: The +Gx direction during reentry pushes blood from chest toward back, keeping it near the heart and brain — much safer for a weakened cardiovascular system
