Field Guide

How to Dance in Ink

This is not a thumb game. Prop the device up, step back six to eight feet, and mirror to a TV if you can. The choreography comes to you as brush circles anchored to your own body.

1. THE STANCE

Face the camera with your head, hands, and hips in frame. The dance begins only when your whole figure is seen — the game calibrates your standing height in that moment.

2. THE ENSŌ

Each move is a brush circle placed where the move ends — a strike, a reach, a sweep. An approach ring closes with the beat: when the rings meet, your hand should already be arriving.

3. THE NAMED HAND

Circles are marked 右 (right) or 左 (left). Only that hand counts. Two circles at once means both hands together. This is how choreography is actually taught — limb by limb.

4. COMMIT THE STROKE

Lazy flicks score nothing: the ink reads your velocity across frames. Strike with your whole arm and a perfect hit becomes a 墨 INK SMASH. The game rewards dancing, not twitching.

5. HOLDS & THE SINK

Large indigo circles are held poses — keep both hands on their marks while ink fills the circle. The Sink (沈) also demands a real squat: drop your hips below your calibrated stance.

6. THE SENSEI

An ink figure in the corner demonstrates the next move and names it. In Learn mode the sensei grows large, the tempo drops, and every miss tells you exactly which hand to fix.

7. JUDGMENT

極 perfect · 良 good · 可 fair · 逸 missed. Perfects bloom vermillion splashes and feed the combo (連). Your gauge is a single ink stroke along the floor — keep the line alive.

8. AFTER THE DANCE

The results seal grades the scroll, and below it the game lists the moves you should practice — by name, with your accuracy on each. Return in Learn mode and drill them.

Studio Roadmap

This file is the playable spec: the move library, the body-anchored chart format, the judgment windows, and the anti-cheat scoring are all defined here. The native build ports the logic and upgrades the sensors.

1. TRACKING — iOS

ARKit body tracking with the TrueDepth / LiDAR stack: real-time 3D skeleton from the front camera plus per-frame scene depth for true 3D hit zones and full-darkness play.

2. TRACKING — Android

MediaPipe Pose Landmarker — the same 33-landmark model this prototype runs — or ARCore. One chart format, two sensor backends, identical judgment code.

3. ENGINE

Unity with AR Foundation bridges ARKit and ARCore behind one API. Keep rendering exactly this flat: ink vectors on paper, no heavy textures — the art style is the thermal budget.

4. BODY-ANCHORED CHARTS

Notes are stored as limb + offset in shoulder-width units, not screen pixels. The same chart fits a child and an adult, near or far — this normalization is the heart of the format.

5. ANTI-CHEAT SCORING

Temporal coherence: never trust one frame. A hit requires sustained, directed wrist velocity across several frames — the fix for the wrist-flick exploit that defined Just Dance Now.

6. THE CURRICULUM

Moves are named, taught, drilled, and assessed per limb — a progressive syllabus in the RCM tradition: technique before tempo, graded scrolls, and per-move accuracy reports after every dance.

7. FOOTWORK — NEXT

Ankles are already tracked. The next chart revision adds step marks on the floor plane, weight-shift detection, and full lower-body choreography once framing UX is solved for small rooms.

8. FIELD OF VIEW

Front cameras are narrow: the dancer stands 6–8 ft back. Ship screen mirroring (AirPlay / Chromecast) as a first-class feature — phone as sensor, television as stage.

9. THERMALS & BATTERY

Camera + pose AI + rendering is a hot loop. Budget: inference capped near 35 fps, stylized 2D output, no post-processing. Ma — restraint — is also an engineering strategy.

10. DEPTH UPGRADE PATH

LiDAR adds true Z: punches toward the camera become judgeable and holds gain depth targets. Log full pose + IMU history — future scoring features live in that data.

11. TEACHING TOOLS

A studio dashboard: instructors author scrolls from the move library, assign them, and read per-student, per-move accuracy over time — recital prep as live-ops.

12. MUSIC & LIVE OPS

Procedural ink instruments for zero-license onboarding; licensed catalogue later behind a streaming model with weekly scroll drops, in the Just Dance Now pattern.
