Find Skills

This skill helps you discover and install skills from the open agent skills ecosystem.

When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when the user:

  • Asks "how do I do X" where X might be a common task with an existing skill
  • Says "find a skill for X" or "is there a skill for X"
  • Asks "can you do X" where X is a specialized capability
  • Expresses interest in extending agent capabilities
  • Wants to search for tools, templates, or workflows
  • Mentions they wish they had help with a specific domain

Skills CLI

The Skills CLI (npx skills) is the package manager for the open agent skills ecosystem.

Key commands:

  • npx skills find [query] [--owner <owner>]
  • npx skills add <package>
  • npx skills update
  • npx skills list

Selection workflow

  1. Understand the domain, exact task, runtime and constraints.
  2. Check the skills.sh leaderboard first for established options.
  3. Search using specific keywords; try alternate terms when needed.
  4. Verify quality before recommending or installing:
    • prefer reputable/official sources such as vercel-labs, anthropics and microsoft;
    • consider install count and repository reputation;
    • inspect SKILL.md and any scripts/hooks before trusting them;
    • reject skills that request unnecessary secrets, excessive permissions, hidden network actions, destructive behavior, bypasses, spam, deceptive claims, or unverified execution authority.
  5. Compare the strongest candidates against the current system before installing. A new skill must materially improve capability, quality, reliability, safety or execution speed; do not install duplicates for collection's sake.
  6. Install only the selected skill and preserve provenance.
  7. Test the target agent after installation and record PASS/BLOCKED/NOT_VERIFIED accurately.

Search is discovery, not trust. Candidate skill status must pass: SOURCE_REPUTATION -> CONTENT_REVIEW -> PERMISSION_MINIMIZATION -> DUPLICATE_CHECK -> COMPATIBILITY -> SANDBOX/TEST -> ADOPT_OR_REJECT.

Never equate popularity with correctness. Never claim a skill is installed, working, or production-ready without runtime evidence.
