\n Every two years, Californias get the distinct pleasure of voting on ballot propositions. Just over half of\n states have some form of ballot initiative, but nowhere is the practice more celebrated or more reviled than in\n the Golden State.\n

\n Propositions can often seem ludicrous (remember the condom prop in 2016?). They can often seem antiquated (this\n year, there are props to affirm same sex marriage and outlaw indentured servitude — didn’t we do that already?).\n Props are often intentionally designed to be confusing — sometimes they even do the exact opposite of what\n appears to be written on the ballot.\n

\n Fear not, Mad Props 2024 is your non-partisan, not-too-serious voter guide for California props. This year there\n are 10 humble measures for your voting pleasure, and they run the gamut. Schools, climate change, affordable\n housing, crime, oh my!\n

\n There’s a common belief that when it comes to props, “just vote no” — that props are just vehicles for special\n interest groups to dupe voters. And shouldn’t Sacramento be making the laws any? This is a representative\n democracy right, not Ancient Greece. That’s sometimes true, but just voting no might not always have the\n intended effect. So buckle up, and enjoy Mad Props 2024.\n
